US ELECTION: BUSH VS. REALITY: Border Security
/noticias.info/ BUSH CLAIMS: We are increasing the border security of the United States. [George W Bush, 9/30/04]
REALITY: OUR BORDERS REMAIN POROUS
Bush Wrong on Border Patrol Officers- Actually Cut Number of Personnel. During the first Presidential debate, President Bush claimed that he had added 2,000 border patrol personnel, 1,000 to each border-when in fact the border patrol has lost 15 positions and officers have been moved from the southern border to the northern border under the Patriot Act. Only 10 Percent of Border Patrol Officers Secure Our Porous Northern Border- Roughly One Agent Per 5 Miles of The Border. There are 989 agents on the northern border and 9,850 on the southern border. While the US-Mexico border is 2,000 miles long, the US-Canada border is 5,000 miles, meaning that roughly one border agent patrols every 5 miles of northern border. DHS Senior Official admits the Borders "Are a Complete Mess." Even Robert Bonner, Commissioner of the Customs and Border Protection calls the border security situation a “complete mess.” A survey sponsored by the National Border Patrol Council, representing 10,000 non-supervisory Border Patrol employees, said that "The vast majority of America's front-line border protection personnel do not believe that they have been given the proper tools, training and support to be effective in stopping potential terrorists from entering the country." [Wall Street Journal, 3/26/04; National Journal, 8/20/04]
John Kerry Left No Doubt He Will Secure America’s Ports and Borders. John Kerry will work with our allies in Canada and Mexico as well as our other trade partners to coordinate our personnel and technology to create and make cargo and shipping and additional commerce security measures more effective in order to keep commerce flowing while keeping terrorists out. He will make sure America has the Customs and Border agents and inspectors necessary to secure the over 7 million containers sent to the US annually. Kerry will ensure our borders have the trained personnel and vital equipment to increase security of our frontiers. And a Kerry administration will ensure that we create a single, effective, and integrated terrorist watch list that is accessible to everyone who needs it, including agents along our borders and the cops on our streets.
