BASEBALL WORLD SERIES: Major League Baseball postseason dominated TV landscape in October

2004 Fall Classic most-watched since 1995; Postseason gave FOX 12 primetime victories

/noticias.info/
The 2004 World Series concluded last night with an 18.2/28 HH rating/share for the fourth and final game, driving the average for the entire series to a 15.8/25, according to data provided by Nielsen Media Research. The 2004 World Series average rating/share of 15.8/25 marks a 23% increase over last year's six game average of 12.8/22. In addition, the average audience of 25.4 million viewers per game makes the 2004 World Series the most-watched Fall Classic since 1995 (28,973,000 viewers), and the most-viewed ever on FOX.
The 15.8/25 HH rating and share ranks as the highest-rated World Series since 1999 (16.0/26) and the best on FOX since 1996 (17.4/29).

Last night marked the 12th evening since the start of the postseason on October 5th that Major League Baseball postseason coverage beat all primetime competition.

Despite going only four games, the 2004 World Series delivered year-to-year increases of 14% in Adults 18-34 (6.6 vs. 5.8), 27% in Adults 18-49 (8.8 vs. 6.9), 12% in Men 18-34 (8.1 vs. 7.2), 22% in Men 18-49 (10.7 vs. 8.8), and 44% in Male Teens over the 2003 Fall Classic. This year's World Series generated huge year-to-year increases in Women 18-34 (+16%), Women 18-49 (+35%) and Women 25-54 (+34%). The average rating in Adults 18-49 and Women 18-49 for the 2004 Fall Classic rank as the best for a World Series since 1997.

The total 2004 MLB postseason in primetime averaged a 10.0/18 HH rating and share, 18% higher than CBS (8.5/14), the highest-rated among the other three major broadcast networks. The 2004 MLB postseason 5.5 average rating in Adults 18-49 exceeded by 38% the 4.0 averaged by CBS, which also leads ABC and NBC in that category.

In Men 18-34, the 5.6 drawn in primetime during the course of the 2004 MLB postseason nearly doubles (+93%) the season-to-date primetime performance for the second-place network (ABC, 2.9 rating).

Like last year, the power of the Major League Baseball postseason boosted FOX into the season-to-date primetime lead in the important Adult 18-49 demographic (the network ranked fourth in that demo prior to the start of the MLB postseason). Prior to the 2003 MLB postseason, FOX never held the number one position among Adults 18-49 on a season-to-date basis.

With a 15.8/25 HH rating and share, the 2004 World Series was the highest rated sporting event on television since Super Bowl XXXVIII, coming in 5% higher than the 15.0 HH rating averaged for primetime coverage of the 2004 Summer Olympics from Athens.

The 2004 World Series average HH rating and share (15.8/25) was 45% higher than the 10.9 HH rating drawn for the highest rated NASCAR race in history (2002 Daytona 500), and eight individual telecasts during the 2004 MLB postseason exceeded the 2002 Daytona 500 rating. The 2004 World Series also exceeded the average HH rating for the 2004 NBA Finals (11.5) by 37%.
