ASIA-PACIFIC BROADCASTING UNION AND INTERNATIONAL LABOUR ORGANISATION COLLABORATION RAISE AWARENESS ON LABOUR ISSUES IN ASIA VIA SERIES OF `LABOUR REPORTS'
Broadcast journalists from 14 Asian countries to participate in
/noticias.info/ Kuala Lumpur; 29 Oct, 2004 -- The Asia-Pacific Broadcasting Union (ABU), in collaboration with the International Labour Organisation (ILO) is implementing a regional broadcast content initiative for the creation and dissemination of video reports designed to raise awareness of labour issues in targeted countries.
Broadcast journalists from countries including Australia, Bangladesh, China, Indonesia, Laos, Mongolia, Nepal, Singapore, Sri Lanka, Thailand, East Timor, Vietnam, Korea, and Japan will participate in co-production training and planning workshops which will yield a series of "Labour Reports" (working title) to be broadcast by participating channels.
The project will include two workshops, the first of which will be held in Bangkok in December, and will result in the creation of two to three (2-3) reports drawn from the countries of the participating journalists. Individual reports will focus on issues such as child labour, forced labour, trafficking, migration and other issues related to the world of work.
The reports will be presented in a format developed and agreed upon by participating broadcasters to accommodate the differing programming requirements of each broadcaster and with an emphasis on the human or social dimension of labour issues.
The initiative aims to educate and enable broadcast journalists to cover issues while serving the dual benefit of providing co-production content and training opportunities for ABU member broadcasters.
"Over the course of the past 24 months, the ABU has acknowledged the role that we, as the media, play in development," said David Astley, ABU Secretary-General. "We have responded to calls from international organisations such as the ILO to participate in initiatives which build public awareness and educate local audiences served by our national, terrestrial radio and television broadcasters."
