Female Emperor Acceptable For Japanese
/noticias.info/ (Angus Reid - CPOD Global Scan) – Many adults in Japan agree with having a female emperor, according to a poll released by NHK. 85 per cent of respondents support the idea of a woman head of state.
A law in place since 1947 allows only men to ascend the throne, but Japan has had eight empresses, the last in the 18th Century. Current emperor Akihito has no male grandchildren. Crown prince Naruhito and wife Masako have a daughter.
Unless the Japanese Diet amends the law on succession, there would be no heir after Akihito ascends the throne. Last month, chief cabinet secretary Hiroyuki Hosoda announced the establishment of an advisory panel to "discuss revising the Imperial Household Law."
