New measures target drug dealers in 'Operation Crackdown'
/noticias.info/ Police across England and Wales have launched a new war on heroin and cocaine dealers.
Starting today, the three-month 'Operation Crackdown' will see 32 regional police forces working together to close crack houses and tackle associated gun crime.
The operation will use new powers to bring dealers to justice and seize their drugs, assets and firearms, say the Home Office.
It will also provide treatment and support for class A drug users.
The new approach will include undercover operations and 'stop and search' of suspects.
Officers will distribute leaflets informing those using illegal drugs that their supply may have been cut off and telling them where they can get treatment for their addiction.
The measure is part of the Drugs Bill announced in the Queen's Speech in November last year.
Home Office Minister, Caroline Flint, said:
"Operation Crackdown sends a clear message to drug dealers that their behaviour will not be tolerated in our communities and that they will be brought to justice and face harsh penalties."
