More Action Needed On Immigration, Say Americans
/noticias.info/ (Angus Reid - CPOD Global Scan) – Many adults in the United States want the government to implement tougher immigration controls, according to a poll by TNS released by ABC News and the Washington Post. 76 per cent of respondents believe the U.S. is not doing enough to keep illegal immigrants out.
The U.S. Immigration and Naturalization Service estimates that more than 7 million illegal immigrants are currently living in the country. While California is home to most workers, Arizona, Georgia and North Carolina have the greatest rates of increase.
In January 2004, U.S. president George W. Bush tabled his proposal for a major overhaul of the country’s immigration system. The plan includes a "temporary worker program" that would grant legal status to undocumented workers. 61 per cent of respondents would allow illegal immigrants who are currently living and working in the U.S. should be offered a chance to keep their jobs and eventually apply for legal status.
Last April, Florida governor Jeb Bush endorsed a bill to provide driver’s licenses to illegal immigrants, provided a rigorous screening process ensures recipients "won’t be terrorists." 57 per cent of respondents would support a federal law to stop states from giving licenses or any other official photo ID to illegal immigrants.
