Liberals Still Top Party In Denmark

/noticias.info/ (Angus Reid - CPOD Global Scan) – The governing Left, Liberal Party of Denmark (V) is the most popular political organization in the Scandinavian country, according to a poll by Catinét Research released by Ritzau. 33.4 per cent of respondents would support the Liberals in the upcoming election.

The Social Democracy in Denmark (SD) is in second place with 27.2 per cent, followed by the Danish People’s Party (DF) with 11.8 per cent and the Conservative People’s Party (KF)—currently a Liberal coalition partner—with 9.2 per cent.

On Jan. 18, prime minister Anders Fogh Rasmussen called a general election for Feb. 8. The 51-year-old Rasmussen—who has headed the government since 2001—said the Liberal electoral platform would focus on "investment in education, as well as research and development." The prime minister vowed to maintain "our strict policy on immigration as well as our freeze on taxes."

In 2003, Denmark committed 496 soldiers to the United States-led coalition effort in Iraq, who are serving under British command in the southern city of Basra. Yesterday, Social Democrat leader Mogens Lykketoft declared that, if he were able to form a government after the election, he would envision "less soldiers and a larger civilian and humanitarian effort." The Social Democrats have also proposed a $1.75 billion U.S. tax relief package for the next four years.
