Terror, Iraq Most Important Issues In U.S.
/noticias.info/ (Angus Reid - CPOD Global Scan) – Americans want George W. Bush to concentrate on two key foreign policy issues during his second term, according to a poll by the Los Angeles Times. 21 per cent of respondents believe fighting the war on terrorism should be at the top of the president’s agenda, while 17 per cent mention the situation in Iraq.
The war on terrorism was initiated in October 2001 after Afghanistan’s Taliban regime refused to hand over al-Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden. In March 2003, Khalid Shaikh Mohammed—believed to be the mastermind of the 9/11 terrorist attacks—was captured in Pakistan.
The coalition effort against Saddam Hussein’s regime was launched in March 2003. At least 1,370 American soldiers have died during the military operation, and more than 10,350 troops have been injured.
Domestic policies—such as simplifying the tax code, pursuing a socially conservative agenda, privatizing Social Security and reforming medical liability laws—rank lower in the list of concerns.
