UEFA Champions League: Shakhtar shine at Dynamo's expense
/noticias.info/ FC Shakhtar Donetsk have started the new Ukrainian season in positive fashion after defeating rivals FC Dynamo Kyiv on penalties to lift the Ukrainian Super Cup.
Shakhtar revenge
Shakhtar, the Ukrainian champions, lost the Ukraine Cup final to Dynamo at the end of May, but they got their revenge in Odesa on Saturday when they won the penalty shoot-out 3-2 after playing out a 1-1 draw. It also avenged their Super Cup defeat to Dynamo, also on penalties, last season, when the inaugural Super Cup match was held.
Rebrov back
Dynamo were without the suspended Jerko Leko and Rodrigo da Costa, as new coach Leonid Buriak named a surprise line-up including Serhiy Rebrov, Ruslan Rotan, Oleksandr Aliyev and Edgaras Cesnauskis. Shakhtar coach Mircea Lucescu was without the suspended Matuzalem but otherwise named a full-strength side, with Vyacheslav Shevchuk the only new face.
Early opener
Shakhtar quickly seized the initiative and went ahead in the fifth minute. Dynamo defender Goran Sablic gave the ball away to Elano Blumer, and the Brazilian made the most of his unexpected opportunity. But the Premier League runners-up weren’t out of the game for long, hitting back before half-time through Valentin Belkevich’s free-kick from a tight angle.
Bielyk chances
Both teams created good chances during the second-half but could not break the deadlock. Ukraine striker Olexiy Bielyk twice came close, but he was denied on each occasion by Olexander Shovkovskiy in the Dynamo goal.
’Important trophy’
The game went straight to penalties after the final whistle, with Shakhtar coming out on top after Sablic and Maxim Shatskikh both missed from the spot. Lucescu said: "Shakhtar has won an important trophy in a kind of game that adds to the club’s traditions. The Super Cup may not mean much, but the full stadium underlines how important it is. We needed to thank the fans."
'Top condition’
Dynamo coach Buryak added: "Despite it being the start of the season, the teams were in top condition. We have praised our players for their commitment. Shakhtar is our arch rival, but we did not demand to win at any cost."
New season
The new league season begins on Tuesday, before the big two kick off their campaigns on Wednesday. Dynamo take on FC Metalurh Zaporizhya while Shakhtar face FC Volyn Lutsk. Both sides will compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2005/06 with Shakhtar, as Ukraine champions, beginning in the third quaifying round, while second-place Dynamo start at the second qualifying phase.
Benitez leaves
Shakhtar have announced that Paraguay defender Pedro Benitez is leaving the club to rejoin his former side Club Cerro Porteño. The 24-year-old did not feature for Shakhtar during a year-long spell at the club. notas_de_prensa_archivo
