CONSERVATIVES: Report highlights cancer services failings
/noticias.info/ Commenting on the Public Accounts Committee report published today, which shows that more work is needed to improve NHS cancer care, Shadow Health Minister John Baron MP said:
"The report rightly congratulates hardworking NHS staff who have delivered some real improvements in cancer services. But we also know there are significant failings – such as over 40% of cancer patients having to wait longer than two weeks between GP referral and seeing a specialist, despite the Government's targets.
"Inequalities in care for different cancers must also urgently be addressed. Prostate cancer in particular lags behind other common cancers. One way the Government could help to put this right would be to give leadership to international efforts to find a reliable test for prostate cancer, as this would allow for the introduction of a national screening programme and could save many lives.
"Labour's targets are blunt tools when it comes to improving cancer services and result in resources behind shunted to the front-end of the care pathway. Holistic standards of care – covering the entire patient pathway – should replace targets as soon as possible." notas_de_prensa_archivo
