2006 FIFA WORLD CUP: POLAND-ECUADOR: Players' Quotes
/noticias.info/ by FIFAworldcup.com
Carlos TENORIO (ECU)
This win is evidence of our hard work and dedication during the preparation phase. It was not an easy match, but we kept our heads ands now the game against Costa Rica is the most important in our history. You have to keep calm in big tournaments. This was not a friendly game and the other team wanted to win as much as we did.
Christian BENITEZ (ECU)
It is crucial to do well in the first game and I feel that we played to our strengths today and deserved to win.
Neicer REASCO (ECU)
We kept our shape at the back and never let them get through into dangerous positions. Now we have to keep the pressure up on our opponents and get a result against Costa Rica.
Edison MENDEZ (ECU)
I think we played an intelligent game overall. We kept our positions all over the field and played well as a team. Our preparation paid off today.
Ulises DE LA CRUZ (ECU)
This was a very important victory but we were always calm heading into this game and knew that we could win if we just played our football.
Ivan KAVIEDES (ECU)
This was never going to be an easy game but we played well and, now that we won, the pressure is off.
Jacek KRZYNOWEK (POL)
Football is about goals and we conceded two tonight. That was the difference in the game - Ecuador took their opportunities and we didn't. We didn’t play like we had planned, which was a big disappointment, and we'll talk tomorrow about how we’ll prepare for the next game against Germany.
Maciej ZURAWSKI (POL)
We still have a chance. There are two games still to go and, although we are obviously disappointed, all is not lost.
Michal ZEWLAKOW (POL)
We made a mistake and were punished for it. The first goal threw us and it reminded me a lot of Korea in 2002 (when Poland lost to the Korea Republic in their opening match) because after we conceded the first goal, we lost our focus, our communication and our organisation. Football is a game of mistakes and we were punished for ours. The second game against Germany is now a very hard task. They are the strongest team on paper in the group and are among the favourites to win the tournament. They have won their first game so they will be confident and more relaxed. For us, it will be a do-or-die game, so it could make things difficult. But sometimes in these situations you can gain strength and motivation. Hopefully we learn from our mistakes tonight. notas_de_prensa_archivo
