2006 FIFA WORLD CUP: Cocu retires from international football

Phillip Cocu obviously hoped he would win 104 caps for his country, implying Holland would have reached the final of the tournament, but it was not to be.
Cocu was handed his debut on 24 April 1996, when Holland also slipped to a 1-0 defeat, against Germany. Goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar made a record 133rd appearance for his country last night and broke the record that Frank de Boer (112 caps) had set. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was brought on ten minutes from final time and thus made an official World Cup debut.
