Fiesta Tigres honors Latino contributions to game

Sept. 2 event features Hall of Fame's Baseball! ¡Beisbol! exhibit

/noticias.info/ The Tigers will celebrate the contributions of Latino players to the game of baseball at ¡Fiesta Tigres! on Saturday, September 2 at Comerica Park.

Prior to the Tigers-Angels 7:05 game, this cultural celebration includes an opportunity to see Baseball! ¡Beisbol! - the National Baseball Hall of Fame's traveling exhibit dedicated to the accomplishments of Latino players. The bilingual panel exhibit from Cooperstown sponsored by CITGO Petroleum also celebrates baseball's impact on the culture of Latin American countries. Baseball! ¡Beisbol! will be on display along the Comerica Park concourse from September 1-6, 2006. ¡Fiesta Tigres! will also include salsa dancing, a live DJ, and mariachi bands. Nuevo Zapopan, Los Politicos, and Rick Cantu and others are scheduled to perform. A concourse auction of items autographed by Latino players to benefit The Detroit Tigers Foundation will also be held. ¡Fiesta Tigres! will conclude with a special on-field ceremony saluting the team's current Latino players.

Detroit Tigers second baseman, Placido Polanco (Dominican Republic), and his wife, Lily, are the official spokespersons for this year's celebration. Other current Tigers to be recognized include 2006 All-Star Ivan Rodriguez (Puerto Rico), 2006 All-Star Magglio Ordoñez (Venezuela), Roman Colon (Dominican Republic), Alexis Gomez (Dominican Republic), Carlos Guillen (Venezuela), Omar Infante (Venezuela), Wilfredo Ledezma (Venezuela), Neifi Perez (Dominican Republic), Fernando Rodney (Dominican Republic), and Joel Zumaya (Mexico). Ordoñez, Guillen, Rodriguez, and Polanco have each purchased fifty tickets for youth from southwest Detroit to attend the game.

In addition to ¡Fiesta Tigres!, Saturday night's game will include a post-game fireworks display sponsored by Verizon Wireless and the season's final Chevy "Drive One Home" giveaway, where one lucky fan will win a new Chevy HHR compliments of the Detroit Area Chevy Dealers.

To purchase tickets to the September 2 game or to any remaining 2006 Tigers home game, call 248-25-TIGER or visit the Comerica Park box office on Witherell Street or www.detroittigers.com. notas_de_prensa_archivo
