PSV: PSV earned a hard-fought 2-0 win over FC Groningen
FC Groningen - PSV 0 - 2
/noticias.info/ PSV have extended their lead at the top of the Eredivisie to eight points with a hard-fought 2-0 win over FC Groningen on Saturday night. Afellay scored the crucial opening goal for PSV on 61 minutes and Koné wrapped things up two minutes from time.
In-form goalkeeper Gomes, again, put in an outstanding performance and by pulling off a number of super saves he kept Ronald Koeman’s team in the game in the first half in particular. The Brazilian international proved a number of times tonight that he is the best Eredivisie stopper and keeping yet another blank sheet put the icing on the cake. PSV hardly created hardly any chances in the first half of their 1700th Eredivisie game, but second half goals from Afellay and Koné sealed victory after all. PSV are now in the driving seat, knowing that rivals Ajax or AZ will drop points when they meet in the Amsterdam Arena tomorrow afternoon.
FC Groningen coach Ron Jans had to cope with a great many injury problems. Paul Matthijs, Arnold Kruiswijk, Antoine van der Linden, Mark-Jan Fledderus and Koen van de Laak all missed tonight’s game, while PSV had to do without Mika Väyrynen. The Euroborg stadium was almost sold out, with an attendance of over 19, 000. PSV head coach Ronald Koeman fielded his regular eleven, surprisingly playing Edison Mendez on the left flank. FC Groningen created the first dangerous moment. Holla brought a wonderful save from PSV goalkeeper Gomes, who tipped his fierce long distance effort over the bar. Farfán and Koné responded by starting some quick counter attacks, but then the hosts took control again and Nevland had an effort on target. PSV were sloppy at times and Groningen, feeling confident after they had earned two opportunities, could rely on their terrific home support. notas_de_prensa_archivo
