Arsenal stars at Women of the Year awards
/noticias.info/ The Arsenal Ladies, last season’s dominant force and ‘quadruple’ winners, have been invited to the prestigious Women of the Year 2007 lunch, taking place in central London on Monday 15th October. The highly established event, set up in 1955 by Lady Tony Lothian, brings together outstanding women from all ages, backgrounds and walks of life, in recognition of their individual achievements.
Each and every woman invited to attend the lunch is considered to be a ‘Woman of the Year’ and is invited in recognition of their contribution to society and achievements in their chosen field. As attendees, the Arsenal Ladies were nominated by a council of over 40 women, including: President, Joan Armatrading, Chairman, Eleanor Angel, Mary Nightingale, Gill Carrick, Ann Barr, Maureen Lipman, Jancis Robinson, Teresa Graham, Nancy Lane, Virginia Wade and Floella Benjamin.
The Gunners were the first team outside of Germany and Scandinavia to win the UEFA Women’s Cup last season, while also winning every domestic honour available having completed the National Premier League winning every match. The four trophies of 2006/07 take the Club’s overall haul to 28 major honours in its 20 year history, firmly cementing the Ladies’ place in sporting history. In recent years members of the squad have also been listed on HRH The Queen’s New Year’s Honours list, with Rachel Yankey and Faye White both receiving OBEs for their services to the game.
President, Joan Armatrading commented: “Each and every woman who attends The Women of the Year Lunch does so because of their considerable achievements. Each year we are introduced to more and more outstanding women and these women often overlook their enormous value. It is my honour and pleasure to ensure they are recognised and celebrated through this event for their enviable contribution to society.”
The 2007 ‘Women of the Year’, whose professions span from the arts to the financial business world, encompassing media, medicine, politics, charity work, agriculture, journalism and much more, will have the opportunity to talk with each other on important issues and listen to key note speaker, war correspondent Christiane Amanpour. For over half a decade, speakers including HRH Queen Noor of Jordan, Designer Vivienne Westwood OBE, and entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox have joined a prestigious list of speakers who raise awareness regarding world issues of interest to women, in an influential arena.
In addition, four awards are presented to highlight a few of these outstanding women. Winners presented in 2006 with the impressive Elizabeth Frink sculpture included: Jane Tomlinson MBE, Thabitha Khumalo, Camilla Batmanghelidjh, Nicky Webb and Helen Marriage.
Winners of the 2007 Women of the Year Awards will be announced at the lunch on 15th October. All of the women who attend the Women of the Year Lunch, including Kelly Smith, Lianne Sanderson, Alex Scott and Gemma Davison on behalf of the Arsenal Ladies do so as Women of the Year.
