Sun Microsystems Vice President Awarded CBE in Queen's Birthday Honours List

/noticias.info/ June 20th 2005, Hugh Aitken, Vice President, Worldwide Customer Fulfillment, Sun Microsystems Receives Honour of Commander of the British Empire (CBE) for Services to the Scottish Electronics Industry and Charity.

Hugh Aitken, vice president, Worldwide Customer Fulfillment for Sun Microsystems, has been awarded a C.B.E in the Queen's Birthday Honours List to celebrate his services to the Scottish electronics industry and to charity. With this award, Hugh joins the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire, a select group of men and women recognised by the Queen for outstanding accomplishments by or benefiting the people of Britain.

Hugh, based in Linlithgow, was nominated for the CBE award based on his vision in building a network to advance technology in Scotland. Hugh was instrumental in establishing the Electronics Scotland Forum and is Chairman of this independent industry driven and funded advisory organisation which represents the electronics sector in the country. In his role as Chairman of the Forum, he has helped bring together all parts of the technology sector from design through to manufacture and partnered with the Scottish and UK governments to develop the technology agenda within the Scottish community.

"Hugh has become one of the main voices of the electronics industry in Scotland in his time with Sun and the CBE is great recognition of his contribution to both businesses and charity in the country," said Trudy Norris-Grey, vice president and managing director, Sun Microsystems UK. "Hugh's drive and persistence has given the Scottish executive clear direction on how the infrastructure of Scotland needs to be shaped to support electronics and he has been instrumental in educating businesses about the need to be constantly evolving and adapting to market dynamics to remain competitive."

In addition to his role as an ambassador for Scottish business, Hugh has also made a major contribution to charity work in Scotland helping to raise over 1.2 million pounds Sterling in the past few years. For more than seven years, he has been a driving force behind the Sun Microsystems Golf Marathon, a successful charity event held in Scotland. This annual event brings together celebrities, Sun customers, suppliers, and executives in an effort to raise money for charities benefiting children.
