EL GUERROUJ FOREVER
/noticias.info/ · Hicham El Guerrouj bagged his fourth 1,500m title, Robert Korzeniowski shattered the 50km walk world record and Perdita Felicien romped home to win gold in the 100m hurdles on another memorable day of top-class athletics at the Stade de France®.
Men’s 1,500m: El Guerrouj lords it
Once again Moroccan Hicham El Guerrouj proved a class above the rest of the field to claim his fourth world title in 3:31.77. Only Frenchman Mehdi Baala (3:32.31) could keep pace with the master when he kicked for home 600m out, but down the home straight had nothing left to give. The home man picked up a well-deserved silver and Ukrainian Ivan Heshko won bronze. The second Frenchman in the final, Fouad Chouki, came in eighth.
Women’s 100m hurdles: Perdita pounces out of nowhere
Team Canada got off the mark thanks to outsider Perdita Felicien who beat favourites Brigitte Foster from Jamaica (12.57) and American Miesha McKelvy (12.67) to clinch gold. Until the final, Felicien had only clocked the 19th fastest time of the season.
Women’s shot put: Svetlana makes it four
Eleven years after winning at the Barcelona Olympics, Svetlana Krivelyova claimed Russia’s fourth gold of the week with a throw of 20.63 metres.
50 km Race Walk: Korzeniowski still the man!
Robert Korzeniowski is still the master at the 50km walk. The Pole defended his title and shattered the world record into the bargain, clocking 3:36.03 to bring his personal haul to eight world and Olympic golds. Russia’s German Skurygin (3:36.42) and Germany’s Andreas Erm (3:37.46) took silver and bronze. “It’s a marvellous day for me. I had the French crowd behind me. They supported me so well I just had to do something special. They made me give everything! You never get tired of winning titles. I still enjoy competition and setting myself new challenges,” said Korzeniowski.
Decathlon: Pappas all in
With no sprinters in final competition on this 5th day, Americans were somewhat absent from the victory podium. It took Tom Pappas in the decathlon to restore order. The man mountain, visibly exhausted at the end of the 1,500m, hung on to his first place (8750 points) ahead of world record holder Roman Sebrle (8634 points) and Kazakhstan’s Dmitry Karpov (8374 points).
Men’s 400m hurdles: Diagana’s World Championships swansong
Home hopeful Stéphane Diagana, suffering from a lack of competition this year, could only come in fifth in his 400m hurdles semi-final. Dominican Republic star Felix Sanchez is an overwhelming favourite for Thursday’s final.
Women’s 200m: Hurtis v White
European champion Muriel Hurtis qualified for the women’s 200m final on Thursday, digging deep to record the day’s best time (22.41). American 100m champion Kelli White looked ominously comfortable though, cruising through to the final in 22.50.
