Schröder: Stabilization of Iraq a shared objective
/noticias.info/ In a speech given in Chicago on February 26, the day before his meeting with President Bush, Chancellor Schröder reaffirmed that both he and the US President are determined to look ahead to the future and to leave behind last year's differences of opinion over the war in Iraq.
Addressing an audience at the Chicago Council on Foreign Relations, Chancellor Gerhard Schröder said the rapid stabilization and democratization of Iraq is an objective shared by both countries.
He reiterated that he will not send German troops to Iraq even in the context of a NATO mission, but underscored that Germany will not stand in the way of an involvement there by the North Atlantic Alliance.
Schröder pointed out that Germany is actively involved in efforts aimed at defeating international terrorism and has provided several thousand soldiers for this purpose, both in Afghanistan and in the Balkans. "We are making a significant contribution," Schröder said, adding that this contribution stands up to international comparison.
The German government has pledged to train 2,000 policemen in Iraq.
