CANNES: Press Conference: "Don't Come Knocking"
/noticias.info/ Competition feature Don't Come Knocking by Wim Wenders was presented to the press today. Present to defend the film with the director were actor and screenwriter Sam Shepard, actors Fairuza Balk, Sarah Polley and Gabriel Mann, along with music director T-Bone Burnett, cinematographer Franz Lustig and producer Peter Schwartzkopff.
Wim Wenders about political implications: “I don't know about political implications. I think the family and the love that you miss because you run away from it is a very, very general topic these days...I think it is just one of the main subjects that people all over the world are concerned with because of the disintegration of the family.”
Wim Wenders on Sam in front of the camera: “To have Sam in front of the camera is one of my oldest desires as a filmmaker. Sam and I shot together an eternity ago, tests. Actually Sam and Gene Hackman were my favorite cast for Hammett [Frederick Forrest] and I shot a test with Sam for a day and it was fabulous. But the studios said, ‘Sam Shepard, he's not a movie star, bring us a movie star.' So I had to give up on my first impulse to cast Sam 27 years ago. And then when he wrote Paris, Texas, I was on my knees asking him to play the part, but he didn't want to do it. He felt the material was too close to him, he didn't want to play the part. This time I didn't ask and that was a sneaky thing from me. And after a few scenes, he casually said, ‘By the way I think I could play this.' “
Sam Shepard on writing the screenplay: "When you're writing a screenplay you don't think in those terms, in terms of theme. They are not questions you entertain when trying to do the practical work of screenwriting, which has to do mainly, for me, with character and keeping it somewhat believable. It's tactile; it's not abstract. “
Wim Wenders on the screenplay: “Sam and I wrote the story together. We found the character and then Sam started to write the first scene. We didn't work from plot at all. Then we would talk about it and then what next. Sam writes strictly for characters, which is so great when you get to the set and you realize those characters are already on paper, because they are what it's all about.
With some movies you really have to start inventing the character when you get to the set. With Sam you can rely that it's there. The characters never have to convey the story; they are the story. “
Sarah Polley on her character: “There isn't a single expository line in the script. I don't think there is ever a moment when you're saying a line to bridge a gap. I've never had that experience before. “
Wim Wenders on Butte, Montana: “Franz and I went to great lengths to make Butte look painterly. We knew from the beginning where it was going to take place. I've known this town for almost 30 years. We wrote the beginning for Monument Valley but didn't shoot there. It was a strange disappointment when I got there, but Monument Valley has lost its soul.” notas_de_prensa_archivo
