NEW SAA EXECUTIVE TEAM ANNOUNCED

/noticias.info/ 29 May, 2005, JOHANNESBURG: After months of thorough investigation and analysis, South African Airways (SAA) President and CEO Khaya Ngqula announced the top executive team to help drive the company’s turnaround strategy.
Introducing the structure to SAA staff in a communiqué, Ngqula said, “This new organisational top structure is part of the process that we began last year when we realigned structures at SAA to increase efficiency and remove duplication.”
The new organisational structure is based on four key principles:

The strengthening of governance and risk management.
A focus on operational efficiency and an improved sales marketing drive and cost reduction.
An aggressive focus on customer service throughout the various areas of the company and the creation of an overarching customer service end to end conceptual, standard setting and monitoring function starting from brand satisfaction, customer response handling and operational performance.
Introduction of a culture of excellence with profit and cost control as the main objective.

Focus on Effective Governance:

Ngqula established an executive team of seven direct reports that includes the following:

The Chief Operations Officer: Kyrl Acton.

The Chief Risk Officer: Dan Moeti who has started setting up an enterprise wide risk management strategy for SAA. Risk management has become a separate high priority area for our strategy with dedicated departments for business risks, financial risks, compliance and auditing.

The Company Secretary: Thelma Melk is accountable directly to the SAA Board and will be tasked with strengthening accountability and governance issues at SAA.

Maintaining their current responsibilities are:

Chief Financial Officer: Tryphosa Ramano, who has also taken over the co-ordination of the Profit Improvement Programme - Bambanani as well as Procurement, Property Management and Acquisitions. The Finance department has been boosted and will focus more on budget control and will absorb transactional commodity tasks under Group Finance including the company’s payroll.

General Manager Human Resources: Nolwazi Qata. This function will focus more on strategic value add tasks by streamlining Human Resources services and creating a performance and talent management function.

Receiving new responsibilities are:

General Manager Business Development: Nomfanelo Magwentshu. Currently in charge of the CEO’s office, as well as heading up Aeropolitical Affairs and Alliances will now also be in charge of long term Business Planning. Key among her responsibilities will be to oversee SAA’s integration into Star Alliance and the execution of a strategy to expand into the continent. This new function is expected to create a strong and well-delineated group, long-term planning and alliance management function ensuring strategic priority setting and consistency across functions.

General Manager Communications and Customer Services: Onkgopotse JJ Tabane will be responsible for the company’s Customer Service Standards and Monitoring as well as the customer service project aimed at all 11 000 staff at SAA over and above his responsibility for SAA’s Communications, Government Liaison and Corporate Social Investment programme.

Focus on Efficient Operations:

The appointment of a Chief Operations Officer, Kyrl Acton, was one of the most critical areas to be achieved as part of SAA’s organisational re-engineering process. The COO will drive commercial tasks, i.e. network management, network growth, implementation and commercially set the pace for fleet development. To be able to do this effectively the COO has 8 direct reports covering a wide range of operational area, including the following:

Head of Safety and Security: Bert Meintjes
Head of Marketing: Nonhlanhla Koza
Head of Network Planning and distribution: Adrian Hamilton-Manns
Head of Technical Operations: Jan Blake

Also reporting to the COO is the acting Chief Information Officer, Mike Re.

The General Managers who will report to the COO are:

Molebatsi Moagi: General Sales Manager
Patrick Dlamini: General Manager Cargo.

A new area established under the COO is a function to be known as Passenger Services. This area will be responsible for system wide catering, all ground operations as well as Cabin crew management. This will go a long way in ensuring seamless travel for our passengers. The COO will appoint a leader of this critical area in due course.

Ngqula stated he is confident the executives appointed will execute their responsibilities with distinction. He called on all staff to support them in their new responsibilities.
“As you will notice, we have gotten rid of the confusing titles of Presidents and Vice Presidents. We have now adopted job titles that speak to people’s responsibilities. All these changes will go a long way in consolidating the good work you all are already doing in making the turn around strategy bear fruit,” says Ngqula.
