LIVERPOOL FC: HOULLIER: REDS MUST DEFEND THEIR TITLE

/noticias.info/ Gerard Houllier has admitted he was delighted to see Liverpool win this season's Champions League - and has insisted they must be allowed to defend their trophy next season.
Houllier, who has taken over as manager of Lyon on a two year deal, says the Reds must be given the opportunity to play in the competition again next season even though they haven't qualified through their league position.

"I was really so pleased that Liverpool won the Champions League for the fans, the players and the club," said Houllier.

"I'd be gutted if they are not in the Champions League next season. Common sense should prevail and the winners of the Champions League should be the first ones to defend it."

Houllier is delighted to be back in football after spending last season working as an expert for French television.

"The break has done me good but I needed to get back into football," he said. "Lyon is a big club. They've won the title four times in a row and played six consecutive Champions League campaigns.

"I'm facing a big challenge here as finishing second in the league would be a failure.

"But I really am fine. I checked with my surgeon and a surgeon at Lyon before I took the job. I've learnt from my experience and I know how to balance my workload and when to take a break." notas_de_prensa_archivo
