Football Europe: Summer no holiday in Slovenia
/noticias.info/ With the domestic season over, Slovenian football fans are enjoying a brief rest although it promises to be a busy summer.
Title defended
The First League ended with NK Gorica claiming a second successive title, finishing 13 points above nearest rivals NK Domžale and NK Publikum. However, in the weeks following the final round of matches on 28 May, all three clubs have lost important players.
Players leaving
Gorica will have to replace Slovenian international Andrej Komac, who has joined CS Marítimo in Portugal, while his national team-mate Aleš Kokot is heading to Germany to link up with Slovenia goalkeeper Borut Mavric at SpVgg Greuther Fürth.
Cimerotic offers
Slovenian Cup winners Publikum have signed a four-year extension with coach Marko Pocrnjic but have parted company with Simon Sešlar, who has gone to Israeli side Hapoel Nazareth FC. The Celje club may also lose striker Sebastijan Cimerotic who is considering a number of offers.
Domzale debut
Domzale were the season's surprise package but success has come at a cost, with defender and captain Velimir Varga having left for Belgium's R. Charleroi SC. They will need to rebuild quickly as they prepare for their first-ever European campaign in the UEFA Cup, as will Slovenia's UEFA Intertoto Cup contenders - and fellow debutants - NK Drava.
League concerns
However, the overriding concern for next season is the state of the 12-team First League. With NK Olimpija Ljubljana having announced their financial collapse, NK Zagorje relegated and NK Ljubljana and NK Mura refused top-flight licences for 2005/06, it looks likely that the league could feature just ten clubs.
Heroes reunite
Relief from domestic worries will come next Saturday when the Slovenia side that qualified for the finals of UEFA EURO 2000™ and the 2002 FIFA World Cup are reunited at Ljubljana's Cetralni stadium. The UNICEF-organised charity game will see Zlatko Zahovic and company take on an international lineup featuring the likes of Robert Prosinecki, Davor Šuker and Predrag Mijatovic. notas_de_prensa_archivo
