WIMBLEDON: Tipsarevic Through as Injured Haas Retires
/noticias.info/ Tuesday, June 21, 2005
Bad luck ruined the opening match at The Championships for top German player and No.19 seed Tommy Haas, who twisted his ankle during the warm-up.
The German was hitting against Janko Tipsarevic of Serbia-Montenegro when he stepped on a ball while practicing his serve during the warm up. Within moments a huge lump of fluid had collected around Haas's injured ankle and he limped back to his seat.
Clearly in pain, the 27-year-old nursed the swelling with an icepack while waiting for his physio to arrive. He was then treated with both painkiller sprays and layers of bandage in his quest to carry on.
But the injury severely reduced the German's ability to run and also affected his serve. He was broken consistently and conceded the first set 6-2. Haas opened the second set by holding on to his serve, but was broken again in the third game. Realising he couldn't cope any more, the seed was forced to retire at 2-6, 1-2.
Ironically, Haas has made an outstanding comeback in 2004 after missing all the Grand Slams in 2003 due to a nagging right shoulder injury. He reached the fourth round at Indian Wells and later captured his first ATP clay court title in Houston defeating No.2 seed Andy Roddick. He was also a quarter-finalist at the US Open in the same year and came into these Championship full of confidence.
