WIMBLEDON: Around the Courts: Ladies' Singles
/noticias.info/ Tuesday, 21 June, 2005
Vera Zvonareva has reached the fourth round of Wimbledon for the past two years but today she looked on course to make an early exit. The Russian No. 11 seed was taken to task by Germany's Marlene Weingartner on Court 14 in balmy conditions.
In less than half an hour, the 20-year-old found herself 6-2 down and it was evident something needed to change. That happened to be her serve, with Zvonareva boosting the number of first serve points won from 50 per cent in the first set to 80 per cent in the second. Clinching the second set 6-4, the Russian suddenly found renewed confidence and raced through the final set without dropping a game.
Zvonareva wasn't the only seed troubled today. No.18 Tatiana Golovin was bounced out of the tournament by Ukraine's Alyona Bondarenko in three sets. The defeat came as somewhat of a surprise. Last year the Frenchwoman had a breakthrough year, making it to the quarters of both the Australian Open and Wimbledon.
But unforced errors contributed to a 3-6, 6-3, 5-7 loss. Bondarenko, meanwhile, had every reason to smile after the match - this is the first time she has made it past the first round of a Grand Slam.
Elsewhere, the No.21 seed, Francesca Schiavone of Italy, went down 3-6, 6-3, 7-9 against Puerto Rico's Kristina Brandi. Australia's Nicole Pratt had more luck on Court 19, defeating Slovakia's Ludmila Cervanova's 3-6, 6-3, 6-1.
Despite the heat, some players were finding their matches straightforward. Israel's Shahar Peer sailed through her encounter with America's Meilen Tu, 6-3, 6-3.
That scoreline was to be repeated in three other Ladies Singles' matches taking place at the same time, with two of the losers being Spanish. Korea's Yoon Jeong Cho swept aside Arantxa Parra Santonja, while spectators on Court 11 saw Anabel Medina Garriques' hopes of making it to the second round dashed by Slovenia's Katarina Srebotnik.
Meanwhile, Cara Black, last year's Wimbledon Mixed Doubles and Ladies' Doubles Champion, registered the same score over the Czech Republic's Zuzana Ondraskova. The Zimbabwean doubles specialist will be hoping to at least match her best single's performance at The Championships, when she reached the third round two years ago.
