WIMBLEDON: Davenport Dominant in Graveyard Win
/noticias.info/ Wednesday, June 22, 2005
Scheduling the world number one and top seed out on Court No 2 may have surprised a few people but at the other end of the scale, it will have delighted many others who wouldn't expect a player of her stature to be consigned to the court dubbed many years ago, as "The Graveyard of Champions".
Jamea Jackson, aged 18, may well not have been aware of this fact. Had she, it might well have boosted her confidence, knowing that, historically, the court favoured the underdog. But, as it turned out, she was overwhelmed by the power of Lindsay Davenport as the 1999 Champion swept into a 6-0 lead within 17-minutes.
But the demons who brought about the demise of past champions, suddenly arrived to help Jackson, to the delight of the crowds who voiced their support for the young Wimbledon debutant when she won her first game, breaking the mighty Davenport serve to level the second set at one-all.
From that point Jackson, a qualifier, took the lead playing with more authority and going for her shots, much as Davenport had expected before the match.
"She is a good young player," the 29 year-old had said. "Anyone who fought their way through qualifying and the first round here must be playing well," she added.
Jackson's revival proved shortlived. Davenport found her serving groove and realigned her ground shots to recover and sweep ahead again. She eventually progressed to a place in round three with a 6-0, 6-3 victory.
She had avoided the pitfalls of the 'Graveyard'. "To me a grass court is always a grass court. Court No. 2 though is a bit tougher," she admitted. "I've found the bounce is a little bit better on the bigger courts. It's definitely a little louder because you've got the restaurant nearby, but it was fine."
And as far as the match was concerned, she added simply: "The first set was easy, the second set was not. It was tough."
And it should get tougher the further she progresses in the draw.
