WIMBLEDON: Easy Win for Kim
/noticias.info/ Wednesday, June 22, 2005
The Californian blonde, Marissa Irvin, was handed an unpleasant eve-of-birthday present in the bright sunshine of No.1 Court when she crashed to a 6-1, 6-1 second round defeat at the hands of Kim Clijsters.
Irvin, a Santa Monica resident, could do nothing to stem the flow of rocket-propelled winners from the racket of the 15th seeded Clijsters. In fact, she helped the Belgian on her way to an overwhelming victory in just 44 minutes with a flood of 22 unforced errors.
Irvin, who will be 25 tomorrow, was not permitted much time to celebrate the fact that she had just survived Wimbledon's opening round for the first time in six attempts. The outcome was clear from the opening game, when Clijsters broke and celebrated with a modestly raised clenched fist.
That advantage was rapidly upped to 4-0 inside 10 minutes as Irvin's attempts to counter the Clijsters power game invariably sailed out of court. On one occasion, the Belgian needed to move quickly to avoid being struck by one of the American's wilder efforts.
Although Irvin managed to win a game with a sweetly-timed forehand volley, she had no answer to the big-hitting from the other side of the net, frequently being left stranded as winners hurtled past.
Clijsters sealed the opening set with a smash in just 21 minutes, having dropped a mere three points on serve and 12 points in all.
Mixing the power game with some beautifully timed drop shots, Clijsters easily held at bay Irvin's attempts to get back into the match in the second set, dominating on serve and dropping just one point on her own delivery.
Clijsters broke for a 3-1 lead when Irvin perpetrated her fourth double fault and wrapped up the simplest of victories by sweeping through the next three games to stay on course for a projected fourth round clash with the No.1 seed, Lindsay Davenport.
