WIMBLEDON: Dent Wins All-American Clash
/noticias.info/ Wednesday, June 22, 2005
Taylor Dent moved into the third round of The Championships after an easy win in the all-American clash on Court 18.
The No. 24 seed was superior to Kevin Kim in every department, winning the match in straight sets 6-3, 6-4, 6-4. Dent, who needed five sets and four hours to beat Belgian giant Dick Norman in the first round, was in no mood to hang around today.
His trademark booming serve and accurate groundstrokes were in full flow from the start and Californian-based Kim, 26, only occasionally troubled an opponent who is ranked more than 40 places above him in the world rankings.
The first two sets were almost identical. Games went with serve until Dent earned vital service breaks in the eighth and fifth games respectively after some nervous play from Kim who appeared to be struggling in the hot conditions.
Realising the match was slipping away, Kim decided his only chance of turning the game in his favour was to change his tactics. He converted to a more attacking style of play that would have been useful earlier in the game.
Cheered on by the crowd, Kim managed to break Dent's serve for the first time with a couple of fantastic backhand returns that flew past his opponent. However, a pumped-up Dent was determined not to let the match go into a fourth set.
He quickly regained his composure to gain an immediate break-back to bring the scoreline back to 2-2. Dent then stifled Kim's hopes of any sort of comeback by breaking his serve again in the ninth game.
At 5-4, Dent kept his focus and a pin-point ace down the centre line took him safely through to the third round.
