WIMBLEDON: London 2012: Cultural Festival Planned
/noticias.info/ Wednesday, 22 June, 2005
The news came as senior figures from the country's cultural community gathered for a major conference to explore the opportunities hosting the 2012 Games would bring to the creative sector.
Jude Kelly, Chair of London 2012's Arts, Culture and Education Advisory Committee, said: "If we host the 2012 Games we will ask the athletes to bring their own cultures with them to London and help us stage a World Cultural Festival.
"The gathering of the peoples of the world would be seen through the arts, film, food, languages and customs of every culture."
The World Cultural Festival has been inspired by the vision of Baron Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Movement, who saw the Olympic Games as a unique opportunity for different cultures to learn from each other.
A series of major events in Cardiff, Glasgow and London have taken the theme of 'Exploring Internationalism' to involve the cultural sector in the capital's plans for the 2012 Games.
And Ms Kelly said that the London's bid provided a unique opportunity for the UK to explore its place in the modern world.
"This is a real chance for us to use London 2012 as an opportunity to establish, strengthen, develop and learn from our relationships with our international neighbours," she said.
Sir Christopher Frayling, Chair of Arts Council England and a keynote speaker at the London conference, said: "Here's a terrific opportunity for sport and the arts to celebrate their distinctive and their shared contributions.
"Arts Council England believes in the power of the arts to challenge, inspire and change across borders, in every sense of the word.
"By launching our international policy today we are demonstrating the value that we place on international dialogue and exchange and two-way traffic."
And Sir David Green, Director-General of the British Council, added: "Should London be successful, we should grasp the opportunity to draw together millions of young people... to build mutual understanding in projects which utilise both the Olympic Games and education and culture."
