WIMBLEDON: Hewitt Feels Good
/noticias.info/ Wednesday, 22 June, 2005
Lleyton Hewitt, the world number two, progressed relatively comfortably today. Speaking after his second round victory over the Czech Jan Hernych, he indicated he was satisfied with himself so far. "I feel pretty good," he said. "I can't complain right at the moment - the body feels good and obviously, to get a tough four-set match under my belt is going to hold me in good stead the longer I go into the tournament."
Hewitt, who might well have regained the world No.1 slot last year but for a certain Swiss player who tended to get the better of him, remains as determined as ever. "You've got to get out of some tough matches in the first week of Grand Slams. I got off to a good start, had a couple of lapses throughout the second and third set, but was able to concentrate when I needed to and play the bigger points well."
Now he is looking forward to facing up to Justin Gimelstob, the American who has grabbed all his chances having been handed a 'Lucky Loser' ticket from last week's qualifying competition. "His serve is his biggest weapon," Hewitt mused. "He's going to serve-volley a hell of a lot and plays with passion as well. He's a guy who is always going to leave everything on court. I'm going to have to return well and pass well and be very sharp."
The Australian won't be drawn as to his long term prospect this fortnight, but there is no doubt that he likes his chances of stripping Roger Federer of his crown. "Australians love to win," he declared, though that was in answer to a question relating to the forthcoming Ashes series, which he will also be following. But it also concisely describes his own frame of mind.
