Indonesia: Natsios - US to rebuild Banda Aceh-Meulaboh road
/noticias.info/ Washington, Indonesia-Relief -- Last week, JICA of Japan offered tender to rebuild half part of the road between Banda Aceh and Meulaboh. But on Thursday, the Administrator of USAID Andrew Natsios said US want to build the entire 240 km roads, that has been damaged not only by tsunami, but also by last December earthquake.
''The first is large-scale infrastructure reconstruction. We will be rebuilding -- helping to rebuild the Banda Aceh Meulaboh Road in Indonesia, which is a 240-kilometer road project. I think there's 110, 120 bridges on that road, so this is a large infrastructure project. It was severely damaged during the tsunami and the earthquake. So, I mean, people think there was just a tsunami. There was an earthquake that caused the tsunami and that did damage to the infrastructure in the interior of the island beyond just what damage the tsunami itself did. The road will be rerouted from along close to the water so that we won't have a repetition of this,'' Natsios told reporters in Washington, on explaining the four element of USAID's $656 million reconstruction plain.
In June 15, Japan International Cooperation System (JICS) -- as implementing agency of JICA (Japan International Cooperation Agency)-- has started procurement and tender process for reconstruction of road connecting city of Meulaboh and Calang, west coast of Aceh.
The 115 km road will be built using Rp 585 billion ($62 million) of grant provided by government of Japan. The road will be connected with road from Banda Aceh to Calang that will be built by US government.
Memorandum on the 'The Procurement of Goods Under Japan's Non Project Grant Aid 2004'' of JICS signed General Secretary of Public Works Minister Roestam Syarif and JICS Program Manager Shoji Hasegawa in Jakarta. The MoU provides guideline on procurement of heavy equipment, road construction materials, consultant, and implementation of the road construction. notas_de_prensa_archivo
