UEFA Intertoto Cup: Bento propels Varteks to victory

/noticias.info/ Leon Benko scored four times as NK Varteks overturned a first-leg deficit against KS Dinamo Tirana to seal their passage to the second round of the UEFA Intertoto Cup, along with eleven other sides.

Benko backlash
Trailing 2-1 after the first leg, Varteks claimed a resounding 4-1 second-leg victory, despite falling behind early on through Altin Haxhi's goal for the Albanian outfit. Benko then came to the fore, scoring all four goals in a 5-3 aggregate triumph to set up a second round match with the winner of Sunday's game between FC International Turku and ÍA Akranes.

Martin dismay
FK Žalgiris Vilnius were the first team of the night to progress after a 48th minute Andrei Shylo penalty gave them a 1-0 win in Northern Ireland against Lisburn Distillery FC - who had John Martin dismissed on 66 minutes - and a 2-0 overall winning scoreline. The Lithuanian First Division side will face the victor of Bangor City FC and FC Dinaburg in the next round.

Berg confirmation
IFK Göteborg eliminated FC Victoria Rosport to advance to the next phase against either Lombard-Pápa TFC or FC WIT Georgia. The Swedish First Division outfit, who drew the first leg in Luxembourg 1-1, ran out 3-1 winners thanks to two goals from Dennis Jonsson and Marcus Berg's last-minute strike. Fabio Morais had earlier equalised for Rosport in the 19th minute.

Griffiths joy
A hat-trick from Joel Griffiths ensured Neuchâtel Xamax FC kept a second-round date with French Ligue 1's AS St-Etienne, after sweeping aside FC Lernagorts-Ararat of Armenia 6-0. Patrick Baumann, Pascal Oppliger and Julien Cordonnier were also on target in a resounding 9-1 aggregate win.

Pogon hit six
MKS Pogon Szczecin were also high-scoring winners - at the expense of Moldova's FC Tiligul Tiraspol. Leading 3-0 from the opening game, the Polish side added a further six to their goal tally, with Sergio Batata scoring twice. Tiligul could only muster efforts from Serghei Cuznetov and a Dumitru Bacal spot-kick in reply.

Moshe decisive
Beitar Jerusalem FC will travel to Czech Republic side FC Slovan Liberec in the next stage after gaining a 2-1 win in FYR Macedonia against FK Sileks, to add to their 4-3 first leg triumph. Stevica Ristic struck for the home side on the half-hour mark, but the Israeli Premier League team soon replied through Aviram Brochyan before Shlomi Moshe sealed victory in added time.

Vujadinovic scare
FK Buducnost Podgorica have earned the right to face RC Deportivo La Coruña, despite a 2-2 second leg draw with Maltese side Valletta FC. Buducnost looked to have picked up from where they left off - following a 5-0 first-leg win - when Radislav Sekulic struck after just a minute, only to then have goalkeeper Miroslav Vujadinovic sent off for a professional foul shortly after and Massimo Grima levelled from the resultant penalty. However, a second Sekulic effort ensured the Serbia and Montenegrin side's passage before Gilbert Agius's late consolation.

Wolfsburg wait
SK Sturm Graz recovered from a 1-1 first-leg draw in Andorra to secure a date with German Bundesliga's VfL Wolfsburg in round two after a comprehensive 5-0 win against FC Rangers 5-0. Bojan Filipovic, Amadou Rabihou, captain Jürgen Säumel were all on target before substitute Dragan Šarac added a late double.

French journey
Lech Poznan also secured a date with a leading European side, RC Lens of France, after Marcin Wachowicz and Maciej Scherfchen helped them to a 4-1 aggregate win against Azeri outfit FK Karvan Evlakh.

Bistrita bound
A last-minute Edin Saranovic goal doubled NK Slaven Koprivnica's aggregate lead and condemned Slovenia's NK Ptuj to an early exit from the competition. Slaven Karacic's side are likely to face FC Gloria 1922 Bistrita in the next phase as they lead Olympiakos Nicosia FC 5-0 after one leg.

Lokoren relief
Aleksandr Tarassenkov's goal for JK Trans Narva at KSC Lokeren OV was not enough to prolong the Estonian outfit's Intertoto Cup adventure. The Belgian First Division members prevailed 2-1 over the two legs, with BSC Young Boys of Switzerland their next opposition on the road to UEFA Cup qualification. The two-legged ties will be played on 2/3 and 9/10 July. notas_de_prensa_archivo
