UEFA Intertoto Cup: Resurgent Gent gain progress
/noticias.info/ AA Gent overturned a 1-0 first leg deficit to progress to the second round of the UEFA Intertoto Cup, after defeating Bohemian FC 3-1 at home to clinch a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.
Late scare
Three goals in the opening hour from Nordin Jbari, Ynguar Håkonsen and Wouter Vrancken did the damage, though their Irish counterparts ensured a frenetic finale with a spectacular late strike from Desmond Byrne.
Great start
The Belgian First Division side made a flying start to the match when Jbari slid skilfully past his marker before beating goalkeeper Matthew Gregg to give his team the lead with only a minute gone, and level the scores on aggregate.
Håkonsen stunner
Gent continued to press following the early goal and found themselves ahead for the first time over the two legs nine minutes later when Håkonsen doubled the scoreline on the night, unleashing a ferocious drive into the roof of the net.
Vrancken decisive
Bohemians best opportunity of the first half fell to Dominic Foley on 25 minutes but his effort failed to test Gent custodian Frédéric Herpoel and 15 minutes after the restart he was made to pay for that miss as the home side extended their lead. Gregg pushed out Steve Cooreman's initial effort and Vrancken was the quickest to react, effectively ending the contest.
Missed opportunities
However, the visitors refused to believe they were beaten, scoring with 15 minutes remaining courtesy of a stunning bicycle-kick from defender Byrne. A further goal from Bohemians would have seen them progress on away goals, but they failed to do so as Anthony Grant and Stephen Ward both wasted opportunities in the closing stages. Gent now face a second round encounter with either Belarussian side FC Neman Grodno or FC Zlín of the Czech Republic. notas_de_prensa_archivo
