WIMBLEDON: Martina's Doubles Act Rolls On
/noticias.info/ Former Wimbledon Champion Martina Navratilova might have been at least 20 years older than the rest of the women playing on Court 2 this evening but you could not tell by her performance.
The veteran, who is partnering German Anna-Lena Groenefeld in the Ladies' Doubles was, as ever, sharp at the net, intercepting and placing balls with impeccable accuracy.
Within 15 minutes of play the scoreboard was standing at 5-0 to the No.8 seeds, much to the dismay of Frenchwoman Virginie Razzano and Czech Denisa Chladkova. But it wasn't just Navratilova that was on top form. Her 20-year-old sidekick was bouncing around all over the court and driving balls with incredible power.
At times she was almost over-keen in the second round match, snatching volleys at the net. But you could not criticise her, for it was this enthusiasm that saw her running back for difficult overheads and lunging at shots that became eventual winners.
The combination - age and experience, coupled with youthful exuberance - was one that worked well. At times Groenefeld looked concerned at missed points but Navratilova was always by her side, quick to offer advice or reasoning. Meanwhile, the German generated the power to set her partner up at the net.
As the light started to fade, the pair took the match 6-1, 6-4 in just over an hour. The spectators gave a standing ovation and Navratilova signalled to Groenefeld, urging the crowd to acknowledge the youngster's efforts. And they did. In return the victorious pair signed autographs on their way out. notas_de_prensa_archivo
