WIMBLEDON: Pennetta Dismisses Daniilidou
/noticias.info/ Flavia Pennetta, the 26th seed from Italy, put paid to the progress of Greek outsider Eleni Daniilidou in their third round match, 6-4, 6-3.
Daniilidou, 22, had put out reigning French Open champion Justine Henin-Hardenne in the first round. She then lost only two games in her second round match against Laura Granville.
Although 2004 was Daniilidou's third consecutive year finishing in the top 40, she has not had a great record this year until this week's champion-chasing efforts. She went out in the first rounds of both the Australian Open and Roland Garros, and is currently ranked 76.
Twenty-three-year-old Pennetta has won two Tour titles so far this year, in Bogota and Acapulco, but her best performance at the Slams was a third round at Roland Garros. She's already improved on her Wimbledon performance of last year, when she went out in the first round. This year she has defeated Emmanuelle Gagliardi of Switzerland and Gisela Dulko of Argentina in the previous rounds.
The first set of today's match was a lengthy, tentative 47 minutes. It took a few long but stable games for the match nerves to settle, comprised mainly of hard-hitting baseline play. The 5ft 11in height of the Greek was put to good advantage as Pennetta initially found it troublesome to lob over her.
Daniilidou, with her long reach, seemed to have all the time in the world to wind herself up for her powerful strokes. But a weak service game by the Greek, with too many unforced errors, let Pennetta take the lead, which she held on to with increasing comfort. Some great width and depth of play by Pennetta on the Daniilidou serve gave the Italian two set points which she finished off with an elegant drop shot.
Suddenly the second set was going all Pennetta's way. Within 15 minutes, the Italian was 4-1 up, with the Greek looking disconsolate and out-classed. Her inspirational performance earlier this week was beginning to look like a mirage. Pennetta was becoming quicker around the court and Daniilidou was unable to claw her way back into the game. A triumphant Pennetta finished off the set and the match in 31 minutes. notas_de_prensa_archivo
