WIMBLEDON: Venus Too Strong for Hantuchova
/noticias.info/ Venus Williams, Ladies' Singles champion in 2000 and 2001, moved into the fourth round when she defeated Daniela Hantuchova of Slovakia, 7-5, 6-3.
It was the American's seventh straight victory over the Slovak, but it was one of their more closely contested matches. In the opening set the 23-year-old Hantuchova, making her fifth appearance at The Championships, shook off any worries about her poor record against Venus, calmly taking the score to 5-5.
Moving Venus around the court, Hantuchova displayed flashes of the form that took her to No.5 in the world a couple of years ago. With three break point on Williams' serve at 5-5 she might easily have won the first set.
But luck was siding with Williams, who received the benefit of a couple of close calls and netcords, and it was the 14th seeded American who would secure the crucial break and hold serve to love to capture the set in 47 minutes.
Venus kept the momentum on her side in the early part of the second set, breaking Hantuchova to love in the opening game, and capturing the Slovak's serve again to lead 3-0. But nothing comes easily to Venus these days, and Hantuchova rallied for 3-3.
However, Hantuchova, seeded 20, has had her own problems with consistency of late - she arrived at Wimbledon after first round losses at Birmingham and Eastbourne - and she failed to win another game. Venus ran off with the second set in 44 minutes. notas_de_prensa_archivo
