Air Canada provides update on flight operations
/noticias.info/ MONTREAL, July 31 - Further to some media reports, Air Canada advises that it has today cancelled a limited number of its flights, approximately 4% of its overall schedule, as part of a pre-planned schedule reduction due to a shortage of available flight hours on its Airbus narrow body fleet. To provide context, the percentage of flights affected (4%) represents less than the number typically cancelled on a bad weather day of which there have been several this month. In most instances flights were consolidated and larger aircraft were scheduled on the route.
The crewing issues affect only the Airbus narrow-body fleet. This
situation arose as the Airbus narrow-body fleet's operation was severely disrupted early in the month by weather at Halifax and the accompanying de-activation by that airport authority of the airport's instrument landing
systems. This lead to diversions and the usage of a significant number of un-planned flying hours. During the course of the month, weather in the U.S. northeast and Central Canada also proved to be disruptive, with system weather delays for the month running 70% ahead of last year.
Recognizing the impact of these factors, two weeks ago, Air Canada began making adjustments to its schedules. These changes included cancelling some flights, adding others and in many cases operating much larger aircraft than originally planned.
As these changes were made well in advance, customers were notified by the airline and travel agents of the changes. Those customers that could not be reached will be re- accommodated at the airport.
These schedule changes have been made almost exclusively on high-
frequency routes, where Air Canada offers in some cases hourly service. The schedule frequency on these routes coupled with the use of larger aircraft means many customers will be re-accommodated within an hour of their original schedule.
Air Canada expects that all its customers will be accommodated today and all customers are advised to proceed to the airport as planned. Tomorrow a new crew month begins and so no changes have been made to the schedule.
Air Canada apologizes to all customers who have been affected. notas_de_prensa_archivo
