UK: LORD SAINSBURY RE-APPOINTS ENGINEERING AND PHYSICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH COUNCIL CHIEF EXECUTIVE

Science and Innovation Minister Lord Sainsbury today announced the re-appointment of Professor John O'Reilly as Chief Executive and Deputy Chair of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
Lord Sainsbury said
"I am delighted that Professor John O'Reilly has agreed to remain as Chief Executive and Deputy Chair of EPSRC for another term of appointment. He has contributed much to the important work of the EPSRC and will continue to play a key leadership role."
Professor O'Reilly said
"I am pleased to continue at EPSRC and greatly welcome this opportunity to continue working with colleagues in support of engineering and the physical sciences. I value too the fruitful partnership of the research councils working together in the context of RCUK for the overall benefit of research and innovation in the UK." Professor O'Reilly has been re-appointed for three years starting on 1 October 2005.
Notes to Editors
1. The appointment has been made in accordance with the requirements of the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
2. Professor O'Reilly will receive an annual salary of £119,318 and will be eligible for performance awards of up to 15% of his basic salary.
3. Professor O'Reilly does not hold any other Ministerial appointments.
4. All appointments are made on merit and political activity plays no part in the selection process. However, in accordance with the original Nolan recommendations, there is a requirement for appointees' political activity to be made public. Professor O'Reilly has not declared any political activity in the last 5 years.
5. Professor O'Reilly took up the post of Chief Executive and Deputy Chair of the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in October 2001, on leave of absence from University College London where he holds the Chair of Telecommunications.
6. His technical interests focus on Information and Communication Technologies with an emphasis on communication networks and applications. He is the author of some 350+ journal and conference papers and author/editor for three books on telecommunications.
7. He chairs the UK's Network Interoperability Consultative Committee (NICC) for Ofcom and the industry and has served as a specialist advisor to UK Government (DTI and the Foreign Office) and to the European Commission.
8. A Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Scientist, he is a Fellow and former member of the Council of the Royal Academy of Engineering and past President of EUREL, the confederation of European Electrical Engineering Professional Societies. A Fellow of the IEE, of the Institute of Physics and of the British Computer Society, he is the 2004-05 President of the IEE.
9. The Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) is the UK's main agency for funding research in engineering and the physical sciences. The EPSRC invests more than £500 million a year in research and postgraduate training, to help the nation handle the next generation of technological change. The areas covered range from information technology to structural engineering, and mathematics to materials science. This research forms the basis for future economic development in the UK and improvements for everyone's health, lifestyle and culture. EPSRC also actively promotes public awareness of science and engineering. EPSRC works alongside other Research Councils with responsibility for other areas of research. The Research Councils work collectively on issues of common concern via Research Councils UK.
