UK: BOW STREET MAGISTRATES' COURT SOLD - CENTRAL LONDON TO GET NEW COURT DEVELOPMENT
/noticias.info/
Bow Street magistrates' court in central London and the police station next door are due to be sold prior to development of a larger court elsewhere in the capital.
The joint owners of the Bow Street site, the Department for Constitutional Affairs (DCA) and the Metropolitan Police Authority (MPA), have signed a binding contract with Edward Holdings to transfer the site in Summer 2006. The court will operate as normal in the intervening period.
Subject to planning approval, the DCA will develop an existing magistrates' court in central London. Details will be submitted for planning approval in due course.
Announcing the contract, Secretary of State for Constitutional Affairs and Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer said:
"The sale of Bow Street will release further capital to re-invest in our court building programme. Financial investment in courts means that we are better able to provide a modern, effective justice system, tailored to meet the needs of the people who use the courts every day. Our facilities need to reflect the value we place on their contribution."
Notes to Editors:
1. Bow Street magistrates' court opened in 1879. It has three courtrooms.
2. In April 2005, Her Majesty's Courts Service replaced the Court Service and magistrates' courts committees as managing the 650 Crown, county and magistrates' courts in England and Wales.
