UK: PERMANENT SECRETARY TO THE TREASURY APPOINTMENT

The Prime Minister today announced the appointment of Nicholas Macpherson as Permanent Secretary to the Treasury in succession to Sir Gus O'Donnell, recently appointed as Cabinet Secretary and Head of the Home Civil Service.
Chancellor Gordon Brown said:
"Sir Gus O'Donnell has done an excellent job at the Treasury over the last three years and has earned his promotion to Cabinet Secretary. He takes with him the good wishes of everyone in the Treasury.
"I am delighted to welcome as the new Permanent Secretary Nicholas Macpherson, who has been an outstanding Managing Director. Nick brings with him a wealth of experience having run two of the Treasury's most important policy Directorates and headed the office of two Chancellors. I Iook forward to continuing to work closely with him."
Nicholas Macpherson said:
"It is an honour and privilege to succeed Sir Gus O'Donnell. I want to build on what he has achieved over the past three years to continue to make the Treasury a more professional and outward facing department. I look forward to working with the Chancellor, with Gus as Cabinet Secretary and colleagues throughout the civil service and beyond to continue to deliver a strong economy and high quality public services."

NOTES FOR EDITORS
1. This appointment takes immediate effect.
2. Nicholas Macpherson, 46, has been Managing Director of the Budget and Public Finance Directorate, the Treasury's largest directorate, since 2004. In this position Nick has had overall responsibility for the Treasury's work on tax, public finance and welfare reform. Prior to that he was head of the Public Services Directorate from 2001. Other senior positions have included Director of Welfare Reform (1998-2001) and Principal Private Secretary to the Chancellor of the Exchequer (1993-97), where he managed the transition from Kenneth Clarke to Gordon Brown. On leaving university, Nick worked as an economist for the Confederation of British Industry (1982-83) and as a senior analyst for Peat Marwick and Mitchell Management Consultancy (1983-85). He joined the civil service in 1985.
3. The process for replacing Nicholas Macpherson as Managing Director of the Budget and Public Finance Directorate will be announced in due course.
