UK: FOREIGN OFFICE AMENDS ITS TRAVEL ADVICE FOR SUDAN

/noticias.info/
The Foreign Office today amended its travel advice for Sudan to advise against all but essential travel to the country, following continuing unrest.

The travel advice summary now reads:

* We advise against all but essential travel to Sudan until further notice.

* We advise against all travel to the Eritrean border.

* As a result of the death of John Garang, the 1st Vice-President and leader of the SPLM/A on 31 July, the situation in Khartoum and in South Sudan is very tense. There have been demonstrations, numerous violent incidents and some deaths in and around Khartoum. Violence has spread to some other cities, and serious incidents have been reported in Port Sudan, Juba and Malakal. Tensions may be heightened as a result of Garang's funeral scheduled for 6 August. You should remain vigilant, avoid demonstrations or similar large gatherings in public places and avoid all but essential travel in the place in which you are located.

* The Comprehensive Peace Agreement signed in January has effectively brought to an end the civil war. The ruling National Congress Party and the SPLM/A have agreed to form a Government of National Unity, which is due to come into existence in early August 2005.

* Conflict continues in Darfur. For the most part, the situation is more stable than previously, but banditry is still widespread and great caution is needed when travelling outside the major population centres or at night.

* You should be aware of the threat from terrorism.

* We strongly recommend that you obtain comprehensive travel and medical insurance before travelling. You should register with the British Embassy in Khartoum on arrival and keep in touch throughout your stay.

Notes to Editors:

* Full details of the revised Travel Advice for Sudan are available on the Foreign Office website (http://www.fco.gov.uk).

* FCO Travel Advice can also be obtained on the following telephone number: 0870 6060290

* FCO Travel Advice is kept under constant review. This advice is based on our latest assessment of the situation in Sudan.
