Makaay makes Bayern's day

/noticias.info/ Roy Makaay scored twice as FC Bayern München got off to a winning start with a 3-0 victory at home to VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach in the opening match of the Bundesliga season on Friday night.

Ismaël off
The German champions were made to work hard for their victory, however, after new signing Valérien Ismaël was dismissed for a second bookable offence two minutes before the end of the first half.

Hargreaves opener
English international Owen Hargreaves opened the scoring for Bayern on 28 minutes but once again prolific Dutch international Makaay proved the most valuable weapon in the Bayern arsenal, putting the match out of Mönchengladbach’s reach with two goals in the last six minutes.

Bayern pressure
Bayern, playing in front of a 66,000 capacity crowd at the new Allianz Arena, started well and could have taken the lead twice in the opening 15 minutes but Roque Santa Cruz and Michael Ballack both failed to trouble Mönchengladbach goalkeeper Kasey Keller when well placed.

Hargreaves strike
The visiting side improved midway through the first half but Hargreaves struck just as they were beginning to enjoy more possession. Hasan Salihamidzic released Santa Cruz on the left wing and he pulled the ball back for the English international, who beat Keller with a curling shot.

Makaay double
The home side missed a good chance to extend their lead soon after and they looked as if they might be made to regret their wastefulness when Ismaël was shown a second yellow card on 43 minutes. But Borussia failed to cash in on their numerical advantage in the second half and Makaay made sure of the points with two goals in the last six minutes.

Magath praise
Bayern coach Felix Magath praised the Dutch international for his telling contribution. "The match was still up for grabs until the dying minutes. Luckily enough we have got Roy Makaay in our side and he made the difference," Magath said.
