PSV fail to win Johan Cruijff Shield

/noticias.info/ PSV have not succeeded in winning the Johan Cruijff Shield for the seventh time in ten years. They slipped to a 2-1 defeat against Ajax in the Amsterdam ArenA last night. The winning goal was scored twelve minutes from the end.

Bouma opener
The first period of the Johan Cruijff Shield tie was not really entertaining. Both teams earned some small chances, but the game never came alive. PSV midfielder Ibrahim Afellay, who was given a place in the starting line-up, was cautioned by referee Wegereef. The two sides were equal to each other, but did not perform a convincing display. Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink was taken off during the break and the Brazilian striker Robert was brought on to replace him. PSV head coach Guus Hiddink saw his team go on top five minutes after the restart. From a corner Alex found Wilfred Bouma, who could prod home from close range: 1-0. Ajax, however, had a crushing reply. A Steven Pienaar goal was ruled out for offside, but soon afterwards Nourdin Boukhari put his side on level terms by superbly curling home a free kick past PSV keeper Gomes, 1-1.

Ryan Babel
The Amsterdam outfit wanted more. Twelve minutes from final time Ryan Babel was at the end of a well-worked move and clinically finished: 2-1. PSV were bewildered; they did not threaten enough up front and also had to be wary of the counter attacks started by Ajax. Timmy Simons committed a professional foul in the closing stages, for which he was booked. So after the game the Ajax players lifted the Johan Cruijff Shield, which will be put in their trophy cabinet. PSV will have to wait at least one year before they have an opportunity to take their tally to seven Johan Cruijff shield wins. The Eindhoven team will now focus on the trip they will make to Almelo next Saturday, when they meet newly promoted Heracles in the opening game of the 2005-2006 season.
