PGA : Sam On Target For Another Seniors’ Victory

/noticias.info/ Sam Torrance was in devastating form as he set up the prospect of his third win on the European Seniors Tour.

The former Ryder Cup captain (pictured) scorched the Nicklaus course at Carden Park in a six-under 66, and takes a four-shot lead into today’s final round of the De Vere PGA Seniors’ Championship.

“I’ve been playing well all week,” said the Scot who’ll be 52 later this month. “The conditions were a bit easier although the wind’s still swirling around.”

With a card already boasting seven birdies as he lined up a 25-footer on the final green for yet another, Torrance unerringly found the hole.

In sharp contrast 10 minutes later his closest challenger, the holder Carl Mason, hit a poor drive at the 18th, couldn’t reach the green in two and dropped a shot for a two-under 70.

Tied in second place with him is Nick Job, who also bogeyed the final hole when he over-hit his approach behind the green and failed to get up and down. Up to that point the Richmond pro’ had put himself into contention with birdies at the 14th and 17th to be just two shots behind Torrance at one stage.

Scot Bill Longmuir, the winner in 2003 and who’d been joint overnight leader, had a 73, his worst of the week, to slip back to a share of sixth.

A pleasant little diversion for probably the biggest crowds seen at Carden Park was provided by Hank Woodrome.

Having put his second shot at the last marginally into the water, the American divested himself not only of his socks and shoes –but his trousers as well. Then, having gained an adequate foothold, flailed admirably with a wedge, splashed the ball out, accompanied by the biggest cheer of the week, and managed an adventurous bogey.
