UK: RUSSIANS SAY THANKS TO THE ROYAL NAVY

In a telephone call to the Defence Secretary John Reid, the Russian Defence Minister, Sergei Ivanov, today paid tribute to the work of the British team in the rescue of the trapped Russian submersible.
Calling Mr Reid from Kamchatka, where the local time was midnight, Mr Ivanov said,
"I send my deepest thanks and appreciation. For six hours the team worked without interruption to save the Russian submersible. The UK were the first to come, they played a crucial part and we do appreciate that. . This was an ordeal for seven families and I send my thanks to the Royal Navy."

"We are delighted that we could give assistance and we are as delighted as you are that this has had a successful outcome.
"Sometimes when these things happen out of a potential tragedy good things come and in many ways this is a major step forward in ways we can work together."

The ROV SCORPIO 45 is an unmanned remotely operated vehicle. It can operate down to depth of 925m (limited by the length of its umbilical cable). It is fitted with 3 cameras and cable cutting equipment to cut steel cable up to 70mm diameter for debris clearing.
