PALESTINE: President Abbas Meets Maj. Gen. Buheiri and US Security Coordinator Ward

RAMALLAH, Palestine, August 7, 2005 (IPC + WAFA) - - President Mahmoud Abbas met today with the US Security Coordinator in the Middle East, Gen. William Ward, and the head of the Egyptian security delegation to the Palestinian National Authority, Maj. Gen. Mustafa Al Buheiri.

The meeting, held at the presidential premises in Ramallah City, tackled the latest preparations for the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza Strip and northern West Bank, and the rehabilitation of Palestinian security sources.

President Abbas stressed the importance of making the withdrawal a successful experience, and the necessity of making it a step towards liberating the rest of the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967.

"The idea of Gaza first and last is rejected and would not lead to a just and comprehensive peace, based on a two-state solution. [The PNA] will work on making the withdrawal successful, and a step on the path of realizing a Palestinian state backed by the international community," Abbas said.

He also expressed gratitude for Buheiri and Ward for the efforts they're making to rebuilt and rehabilitate the security services. "We have started to receive many answers regarding the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza Strip and northern West Bank. The effort is ongoing on this issue until we reach a day where we'll have all the information by the time the withdrawal starts."

President Abbas also told reporters, before heading to Gaza Strip, that the Egyptian and American sides were also coordinating between each other in order continue the efforts.

With regards to the evacuation of Jenin province, the President explained that he had demanded the Israelis to consider Jenin as Zone A [under full Palestinian control] and that discussions were continuous on that issue.

Asked about a possible meeting with Hamas representatives in Gaza, the President asserted that he wouldn't mind meeting anyone, including Hamas, Islamic Jihad and the rest of the Palestinian factions.

"It is important that we all meet to discuss many things regarding the withdrawal and the activation of the Palestinian Liberation Organization or even the elections. There are issues that we need to deliberate on during these days," he stressed. notas_de_prensa_archivo
