Football Europe: Barbosa hangs up his boots
/noticias.info/ Former Sporting Clube de Portugal captain Pedro Barbosa has announced his retirement at the age of 35.
Offers rejected
Barbosa was released by UEFA Cup runners-up Sporting when his contract expired in June, and has now opted against resuming his career with another club. The midfield player, who was capped 22 times by Portugal, said: "This decision has been in my mind since May. I had offers from Portuguese and foreign teams but I have decided to bring an end to my professional career."
'All my heart'
The playmaker started out at second-division SC Freamunde before joining Vitória SC of Guimaraes in 1991 and then going to Sporting in 1995. "This is a wonderful profession and I gave it all my heart," he added. "I could play at the highest level for a couple more years, but since I cannot do so at Sporting I won't carry on." notas_de_prensa_archivo
