UEFA Cup: Trio grateful for last-gasp goals

/noticias.info/ Last season's UEFA Cup quarter-finalists FK Austria Wien remain on course to repeat the feat but needed two added-time goals to overcome MŠK Žilina in Slovakia in the first leg of this season's second qualifying round. Meanwhile, there were also late goals for NK Široki Brijeg and SV Pasching.

Last-gasp turnaround
Austria pair Filip Sebo and Roland Linz were both on target in the last minute to salvage a dramatic 2-1 victory and deny Žilina a hard-fought win. The home side had led for much of the match through Ivan Bartoš's 40th-minute strike but must now score at least two goals in the return leg on 25 August to remain in the competition.

Pasching comeback
Late goals are apparently an Austrian delicacy as Pasching also benefited from a last-gasp strike. The side looked to be heading for a 2-1 defeat by FC Zenit St. Petersburg when Polish defender Tomasz Wisio equalised with just three minutes remaining. The visitors had twice lead through goals from Aleksandr Kerzhakov and Andrei Arshavin either side of Carlos Chaile's 34th-minute strike.

Narrow victories
There was more late drama at FK Zeta where Croatian striker Hrvoje Erceg scored in the third minute of added time to hand visitors Široki Brijeg a one-goal win. By contrast PFC Litex Lovech sealed their home game relatively early when substitute Zhivko Zhelev – a defender – headed in the only goal of the game during a goalmouth scramble on 83 minutes to deny Croatian outfit NK Rijeka.

Five-goal win
The biggest win of the evening came in F.Y.R. Macedonia where home side FK Baskimi were overpowered 5-0 by Maccabi Petach-Tikva FC. Five different scorers found the net, with goals from Murad Magomedov and Salim Toema, and an Asaf Mashiach penalty opening up a 3-0 lead for the Israeli visitors by 22 minutes. It was another 64 minutes before defender Keir Ederi added to the visitors' lead but there was still time for Rubel Sarsour to round off an emphatic victory.

Zicu double
A Petros Konnafis header gave Cypriot side AC Omonia a shock lead at FC Dinamo Bucuresti, but the Romanian side were soon on level terms after Nicolaos Georgiou conceded a penalty that Vlad Munteanu duly converted. Two goals from striker Ianis Zicu made it 3-1 by half-time and Omonia's hope all but evaporated when Georgiou received his second yellow card ten minutes after the restart.

Away wins
Turkish giants Besiktas JK were forced to work hard for a 1-0 win at Liechtenstein's FC Vaduz with midfield player Okan Buruk scoring the only goal of the game on 12 minutes, while in neighbouring Switzerland Grasshopper-Club defeated Wisla Plock thanks to Eduardo's second-half strike. Viking FK also earned a narrow first-leg win away from home against Rhyl FC, Peter Kopteff's goal midway through the first half proving sufficient.

Oleksiienko strikes
Ukrainian side FC Metalurh Donetsk look to have one foot in the first round after two late goals from Olexandr Oleksiienko steered them to a 3-0 success at FC Sopron. Serhiy Shyshchenko had broken the deadlock after half-time, as did Brazilian striker Álvaro Santos for FC Křbenhavn against Welsh side Camarthen Town FC before Michael Gravgaard sealed a 2-0 win on 54 minutes.

Auer class
With Valeri Domovchiyski ruled out by injury, PFC Levski Sofia limped to a 1-0 defeat at NK Publikum, while FC Maccabi Tel-Aviv were surprisingly defeated by the same scoreline at APOEL FC. Dominik Bersnjak and Marios Neophytou scored the second-half goals. notas_de_prensa_archivo
