Football Europe: Ajax opener delayed until January
/noticias.info/ AFC Ajax's opening Dutch Eredivisie game against ADO Den Haag, which was scheduled for Sunday, has been postponed until 7 January as the result of a court ruling in Amsterdam today.
Major events
The match was due to take place at the Amsterdam ArenA, but the city's mayor Job Cohen vetoed this on the grounds that police could not provide adequate security for supporters, who have clashed on several occasions in the past, due to other major events occurring in the city at the same time.
Loss of income
The Royal Netherlands Football Association (KNVB) subsequently announced that the game should be played at a neutral venue without spectators, prompting Ajax to instigate court proceedings against the KNVB and the city of Amsterdam claiming they would suffer a significant loss of income.
Date fixed
A judge today fixed the date for early next year with the approval of both clubs and the host city. Both teams will now get their campaigns under way on 20 August.
'Unacceptable'
However, the KNVB reacted to the ruling with the following statement: "The FA is of the opinion that its duty is to guide the league and the interests of the other teams and thinks it unacceptable that the league will not have a correct standing for more than half the season. Furthermore, the KNVB believes that a judge should not be able to pick a date for a football match." notas_de_prensa_archivo
