Footbal Europe: Wandering coach Pavic comes to rest
/noticias.info/ Former FK Crvena Zvezda coach Milorad Pavic died in his birthplace, Valjevo, on Sunday at the age of 85.
Yugoslavian crowns
The coach led the Belgrade club to three Yugoslavian titles and three Yugoslavian Cups during the 1960s before embarking on a veritable coaching tour of Europe, starting with a move to R. Standard de Liège in Belgium in 1964.
Belgian success
In the first of three spells in charge, he failed to win the league but took consolation from two Belgian Cup successes in 1966 and 1967 before switching to Club Brugge KV for the 1968/69 season. He subsequently joined another Belgian side, RFC Liège, where he was at the helm between 1969 and 1971.
Spanish high
His next move took him to Spain where he won the Copa del Generalísimo - now the Copa del Rey - in his first term at Athletic Club Bilbao in 1972. He subsequently crossed the border into Portugal, steering Lisbon team SL Benfica to the championship in 1974/75.
Standard comebacks
Further appointments followed at Málaga CF and RC Celta de Vigo before he seemingly ended his career at Sporting Clube de Portugal in 1978/79. However, he twice returned to take charge of Standard, once in 1985 and again in 1987, guiding his side to the Belgian Cup final only to be dismissed before the game itself.
Fateful injury
Known as 'The Gentleman with the Iron Gloves' during his days as a coach, Pavic began his footballing career playing for his local club, Valjevo SK, but went into coaching after suffering a knee injury. notas_de_prensa_archivo
