LIVERPOOL FC : REDS LEAD THROUGH XABI SPECIAL

/noticias.info/ A superb 24th minute free-kick from Xabi Alonso has given Liverpool a 1-0 half time lead over newly promoted Sunderland at Anfield today.
The breakthrough came after Zenden was fouled on the edge of the penalty area giving Alonso the chance to curl a right footed free-kick into the top corner of the net. Sunderland keeper Davis managed to get a hand to Alonso's shot, but was unable to keep it out.

Liverpool were almost in front as early as the 3rd minute when Gerrard's in-swinging strike struck the post. And Djibril Cisse may feel he should have done better when only managing to flick Zenden's narrowly wide on 18 minutes.

Sunderland have had good moments of their own though and were almost level when Whitehead got clear on the right only to see his cross cleared off the line by Finnan.

This game is far from over.
